Healthy Cabbage

Even though many people wrinkle their noses at the mere mention of cabbage, it is a healthy and powerful vegetable.

And even though cabbage is relatively cheap and low in calories (25 kcal/100 g) it is rich in protective vitamins and just perfect for this time of the year. Cabbage not only boosts the immune system’s ability to produce more antibodies, it also provides minerals that work as cleansing agents for the digestive system.

Belonging to the family of cruciferous vegetables cabbage is easy to grow and available in almost all countries. It is not only rich in nutrition in fibre but also a good source of vitamin C. It is also said that cabbage contains phytochemicals know as indoles, which can lower the risk of cancer. If cooked by steaming it can also provide you with some special cholesterol-lowering benefits.

Cabbage has been very popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans and was even then used for medical purposes. In European folk medicine a past made of raw cabbage leaves was often used to treat inflammation and reduce pain. But also modern science has proven the health benefits and therapeutic value of cabbage.

And as there are many different varieties of cabbage you can be really innovative and try different sorts. Green cabbage is of course the most popular and the one you might be most familiar with. But red cabbage with its beautiful plant pigment is good in salads or with a Sunday roast. Or the sweet, light Bok Choy that is used in many Chinese foods.

Whatever cabbage you choose, you should eat it at least once a week along with other healthy vegetables.
